Paul Akers and Jon Lussier from FastCap talk this week about Paul’s recent meeting with innovators and aircraft designers Dick and Burt Rutan, and about Paul’s recent trip to Greece.
Elbert Leander “Burt” Rutan (born June 17, 1943) is an American aerospace engineer noted for his originality in designing light, strong, unusual-looking, energy-efficient aircraft. He is famous for his design of the record-breaking Voyager, which was the first plane to fly around the world without stopping or refueling, and the sub-orbital spaceplane SpaceShipOne, which won the Ansari X-Prize in 2004 for becoming the first privately funded spacecraft to enter the realm of space twice within a two week period. He has five aircraft on display in the National Air and Space Museum: SpaceShipOne, the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, Voyager, Quickie, and the VariEze (from Wikipedia)
Richard Glenn “Dick” Rutan (born July 1, 1938) is an aviator who piloted the Voyager aircraft around the world non-stop with co-pilot Jeana Yeager. He was born in Loma Linda, California, where he gained an interest in flight at a young age. On his 16th birthday, he was busy earning both his driver’s license and pilot certificate (from Wikipedia).
A replay of the wrap up of a 2-part interview with WWII veteran, pilot and innovator Louis Zamperini, subject of the biography “Unbroken.”
Louis Zamperini is one of America’s greatest heroes. An Olympic runner and WWII POW, his life story is being written by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Laura Hillenbrand (author of “Seabiscuit”) and the book “Unbroken”, released in November, 2010.
Lucky Louis Zamperini, Olympic hero, WWII bombardier, plane crash survivor, POW, and survivor of post-war turmoil, is now available to join your group for speaking engagements.
Together with Olympic gold medal swimmer and long time friend John Naber, Louis will join your group in person to tell the story of his amazing life: his challenges, his obstacles, his will to live, and the people who helped him along the way.
Louis was blessed with not only an extraordinary personal will to succeed and an amazing gift of athleticism and talent, but with the power to find it within himself to forgive. The story of how Louis Zamperini was able to ultimately triumph over those who subjected him to his darkest hours is a tale you will never forget.

Paul Akers and Jon Lussier continue their interview with WWII veteran Joe Moser of Ferndale, subject of the new film “Lost Airmen of Buchenwald.”
This is the story of Joseph F. Moser, a World War II fighter pilot with an amazing story to tell. Joe very narrowly survived bailing out of his P-38 with an engine on fire. He was quickly caught by the Germans and sent on the very last train out of Paris–just before the Allies entered. On the train were 167 other Allied flyers–all except him held by the French Underground until betrayed and turned over to the Gestapo by a Nazi agent. They were sent to Buchenwald on orders from Berlin to be executed as “terrorfliegers.” Four days before their scheduled extermination, they were rescued by Luftwaffe officers and shipped instead to the most famous POW camp in Germany–Stalag Luft III. Joe was placed in the very barracks where just five months before, Allied flyers had tunneled out and temporarily escaped. The famous movie “The Great Escape” tells that story. But, as the Allies approached, Joe and the others were sent on a death march to another camp which he barely survived.
Joe is a spry, quiet, humble 88-year-old gentleman living with his wife Jean in Ferndale, Washington, his home town. To find out more, go to Joe’s Blog.
Paul Akers and Jon Lussier interview WWII veteran Joe Moser of Ferndale, subject of the new book and film “Lost Airmen of Buchenwald.”
Lost Airmen of Buchenwald is the gripping and inspiring untold story of 168 Allied airmen shot down, captured, and sentenced to death by Adolph Hitler in Buchenwald concentration camp, featuring Joe Moser, local WWII hero from Whatcom County. A documentary film, Lost Airmen of Buchenwald was produced and directed by Mike Dorsey, with Executive Producer Bellingham writer Gerald Baron, author of A Fighter Pilot in Buchenwald: The Joe Moser Story will be at the Mt Baker Theatre on July 16, 2011. This event will feature a live question and answer session with Joe Moser and Mike Dorsey at Mt Baker Theatre on Jul 16th, 2011 7:00 PM.
Paul and Jon travel to Anacortes to meet with George and Mary Russell of Aspen, Colorado, as the couple in their 60s begin a cross-country bicycle trek. They will be spending the next 60+ days biking across America, beginning their journey in Anacortes, Washington. George and Mary are attempting an unsupported bicycle ride across the United States in celebration of Mary turning 60. They also have a good friend who is a long time Parkinsons sufferer and she are hugely positive about the good work being done for Parkinson’s sufferers by the Michael J Fox Foundation–so it seemed good sense to make the ride a celebration of a new decade, and a way to support all Parkinson’s sufferers.
